NEWPORT'S Transporter Bridge will be transported back in time this Sunday, when staff will dress in full Edwardian style as they would have when the bridge was built in 1906.
Taking their inspiration from old photographs of the Transporter bridge and its patrons, manager Mike Lewis will don a bowler hat while operators will put on tunics.
Mr Lewis said: “The Transporter Bridge is going to run as normal. We’ll welcome visitors and take them across. It should be fun.”
The aim of the day is to create a flavour of what bridge would have been like when it was built and to celebrate the city’s industrial heritage.
Volunteer-led Friends of Newport Transporter Bridge are organising the event, and will also be there in period costume.
They said they hoped it would bring new people to experience the bridge, perhaps by walking over the top, riding the gondola and visiting the motor house, for an all-in price of £2.50.
The event is also to honour Godfrey Morgan, the 1st Viscount of Tredegar. He opened the bridge in 1906, and this year is the centenary of his death.
The day will run from 10am until 5pm and will be repeated on Bank Holiday Monday, August 26. The last opportunity to walk over the bridge will be at 4pm. Usual charges will apply.
