AN ABERGAVENNY father and his cousin will take part in a 14-mile endurance run today to raise funds for the charity which supports his disabled son.

Dean Arnold, of Wern Gifford in Pandy, and his cousin Daniel Evans, will run alongside the Talyllyn Steam Railway on its journey from Abergynolwyn, North Wales, and back in aid of Action for Children, which provides a range of services for vulnerable and disadvantaged people, including Arosfa Disability Short Breaks which is used by his son Callum, 15.

Callum has Lesch-nyhan syndrome; a rare hereditary condition, meaning he doesn't have an enzyme which helps the body break down a nitrogen compound found in food. This can lead to symptoms such as uncontrolled muscle movement, lip and finger biting or banging of the head, and neurological impairment.

His multiple needs require round-the-clock care, but his family can access 40 hours of short break time per year with Action for Children.

Mr Arnold said: “Callum needs two carers, so the 40 hours of time we have with Action for Children means that we are able to have ten two-hour visits a year.

“When he is there, we know that Callum is in a safe and caring environment so my wife and I can relax, confident that his needs are being met.

“Knowing that services like this all come down to funding spurred us on to sign up for Race the Train for Callum and other families like ours.”
