WORK has started on a new cycling and walking route that will connect Chapel Lane in Croesyceiliog to Cwmbran Boating Lake.

The work, that is being funded by Sewta, will cost £760,000 and is expected to be completed by March 2014.

The project will improve links to nearby communities and will involve habitat creation and woodland management.

Cllr John Cunningham, Torfaen’s executive member for neighbourhood services, said: “I was delighted to see the work start on what I’m sure will be a very popular route for walkers and cyclists alike.

“The new route will connect to the existing cycle networks, to new and existing safe routes in the community and will provide a safer recreational and commuting link to attractions, transport and employment areas.

“It will contribute to Torfaen’s on going sustainable transport initiatives.”

Before work started on the project, Torfaen officers consulted residents through the council’s website.
