Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical adaptation of the story of Joseph has been keeping audiences entertained on stage and record since 1968 and is showing no signs of slowing down.
The shows current tour featuring Wales’ own Ian H Watkins from Steps in the title role made a triumphant return to the Millennium Centre Stage on Tuesday Evening.
A sell-out success, the show doesn’t disappoint. Watkins recently described the show as “Comic book meets reality” and it’s easy to see why. Inflatable sheep, talking camels, an Elvis impersonator doubling as a pharaoh all add to the colourful mix of musical action and hijinks set in ancient Egypt with a good dose of varied musical genre thrown in for good measure.
When Watkins turns to the audience during the opening bars of Any Dream Will Do he has them at his command from that moment on. It’s clear he was born to play Joseph as he combines energy and fun with a fine line between comedy and drama to perfection.
Jennifer Potts pulls the story together as the Narrator remaining omnipresent but never intrusive while Luke Jasztal had the crowd in the palm of his hands as Elvis impersonator Pharaoh.
The show culminated in a reprise of the popular numbers with many of Joseph’s energetic brothers (including Newport’s own Rob Wilshaw) racing into the audience to heighten the frenzied concert atmosphere.
A memorable show for all the family, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat continues until Saturday.
