A brave pair of Torfaen women will jump right in to fundraising for St David’s Hospice when they zip down an 200-feat drop next month.

Kayleigh Adams and Alison Smith, from Pontypool, are preparing for their daring feat on September 29.

The zip slide will swing out 70 metres across a flooded quarry lake in Chepstow, and their resolution is all the more impressive by the fact both are afraid of heights.

Mum-of-three Alison, 27, said: “I’m terrified of heights. I didn’t realise how high 200 feet was. It’s about 20 stories high. But I’ve raised my money, so I’m going to do it.”

She has already raised over £200 despite only starting fundraising two weeks ago.

Miss Smith’s father David was diagnosed with prostate cancer in February 2011 and died in June this year, aged 64.

She said: “He adored his friends and was a real family man. He was a bit concerned he didn’t think he’d get to see my daughter born, but was she was born in April.”

But she added that if he could see what her fundraising efforts now involved, “he’d tell me not to be so stupid!”

She has been friends with fundraising partner Kayleigh, 26, for about eight years. Their mums are firm friends and worked together in Asda, where Kayleigh currently works.

Kayleigh’s mother Lynda Adams has Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, giving Kayleigh the motivation to raise money for the hospice.

She said: “St David’s are helping my mum at the moment so we have both got our reasons for doing it. She’s going to be at the bottom – she thinks I’m mad but she's proud of me.”
