THREE teenagers were taken to hospital following a crash in Newport yesterday.

Two girls, aged 16 and 17, and an 18-year-old man were taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital with what police said were minor injuries following a collision on Cromwell Road.

The crash near Liscombe Street junction, between a motorbike and a car, happened at 4pm resulting in Cromwell Road being closed in both directions. Traffic was diverted and queues built up in the area.

Jade Williams said her 17-year-old sister, Megan Williams, was one of the injured. Miss Williams, 20, said her younger sister had suffered leg, face and neck injuries.

She said the other girl is 16-year-old Alisha Myers. The girls were believed to be walking at the time of the incident.

Andrea Robinson, of Gibbos Fish Bar on the corner of Fairfax Road, said she heard a sound and rushed out from the shop to attend the girls.

She said: “We heard a bang and ran out to them. One girl was lying down and the other girl got up and walked into the middle of the road. The bike driver was just stood there with his helmet off."

Michelle Tucker, who phoned the ambulance and police after attending the scene, said: “It’s such a shame.”

The police and ambulance service were called to the scene but fire crews did not attend.

A Gwent police spokesman said: “There was a road traffic collision between a motorbike and two female pedestrians.

“A 16-year-old girl and a 17-year-old were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

“The rider of the motorbike, an 18-year-old male was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.”

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We were called at 4.02pm (Tuesday) to reports of a road traffic collision on Cromwell Road, Newport, involving a motorcycle and pedestrians.

"We sent a Basics doctor, a rapid response vehicle and two emergency ambulances to the scene, and three casualties with non life-threatening injuries were taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport."
