A GUIDE dog owner from Abertillery is gearing up for a driving event with a difference.

Alison Harber, 51, will join other blind and partially-sighted people as they bid to manoeuvre dual-controlled vehicles around a race circuit for Guide Dogs Cymru’s Blind Drive 2013.

Sighted participants can also sign up for the September 29 challenge– with the twist that they must do it blindfolded.

All vehicles will be provided with a qualified BSM driving instructor, talking each participant through the route and explaining the controls.

Ms Harber, who usually relies on golden retriever Amble to get out and about, said: “I passed my test years ago and was driving for a couple of months, but then I lost my sight.

“I don’t think fifth gear had been invented back then, but I could turn out to be quite a fast driver as I’m an adventurous person and I like to do something out of the ordinary. My sister-in-law is going to do it blindfolded.”

Ms Harber has already secured £420 sponsorship for the event, which takes place at Llandow Race Circuit near Cowbridge.

All participants are asked to raise a minimum of £50 sponsorship for Guide Dogs Cymru, with a special prize for the person who raises the most.
