A THIEF robbed a Newport charity shop in broad daylight, stealing £60 from the till.

Staff at Tenovus cancer’s charity shop on Caerleon Road in the city were fortunately unhurt after a man stole the mornings takings from the shop.

The volunteer staff were shocked when a man, who they said had been in the store for a short while, picked up the till causing the cash drawer to eject and spill money over the floor.

Before the volunteers could react the thief had scooped up the notes and fled the shop.

Gaynor Mayhew, manager of the store said she and her staff were still a bit shaken up by the whole affair, but the brave team had opened up again for business as usual yesterday despite the theft taking place on Tuesday.

Police have now launched an appeal to try and locate a man they want to speak to in connection with the robbery.

Officers said the man, who they described as being white, in his late twenties or early thirties, was of slim build and around 5ft 10inch tall with short dark hair.

He was said to be clean shaven and wearing a light coloured t-shirt, a light-coloured unzipped jacket and was carrying a drawstring bag across his chest.

They said he arrived at the shop at around 1.30pm on a black bicycle and made off in the direction of Duckpool Road.
