A BLAENAVON fishmonger will show off his skills while competing at a public event in Cardiff.

Jonny Jenkins, 38, has worked for Vin Sullivan’s in Blaenavon since he was 16, when he started on a Saturday shift.

Now, he is twice winner of the popular British Fish Craft Championships and is going to be competing for the title again, when the event is staged in Cardiff Bay.

On Saturday at 3.30pm, Mr Jenkins will be demonstrating how easy it is to prepare fish such as sea bass and sea bream.

The National Federation of Fishmongers is trying to encourage people in the UK to broaden their fish eating habits.

At present the British public tend to favour cod and salmon, while ignoring species that are both sustainable and cheap, as well as being full of flavour.

Mr Jenkins said: “People might be put off buying certain types of fish as they don’t know how to prepare and cook them. We are hoping that the demos will inspire them to try something different.”

The 2013 British Fish Craft Championships is the 61st British Fish Craft Championship, and will be the fifth year that it has been held in Cardiff - forming part of the city’s Harbour Festival.

Last year a massive three tons of fresh fish was skinned, filleted, trimmed and sliced by the competing fishmongers, and a similarly huge haul will be passing beneath the fishmongers’ knives this year.

All this fabulous, expertly handled fish will be sold to the public at bargain basement prices.

The Bank Holiday Monday will also feature an oyster opening session.
