A BUSINESSMAN from Newport was ordered to pay a total of almost £13,000 for flouting fire safety regulations.

Jaipal Singh Soor, of Malpas Road, pleaded guilty at Cwmbran Magistrates’ Court to eight offences under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

Soor was a director of Falcon Estates (UK) Limited based in Newport which folded while the investigation into the offences was ongoing.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service investigators then identified Mr Soor as the person within the company who had responsibility for fire safety at the premises at 65 Commercial Road, Pillgwenlly, Newport and he was subsequently fined £1,000 per offence and ordered to pay full costs to the Fire Authority of £4,904.37.

Offences included not carrying out a fire risk assessment, not installing a fire door, not having a working fire alarm and leaving the premise in a poor condition that would allow fire to spread.
