VOLUNTEERS at Blaenavon' s Heritage Railway are preparing to celebrate its 30th anniversary.
The landmark birthday of the railway line, which originally opened in 1869 by the London and North Western Railway and the heritage railway, will be celebrated with a biggest steam gala in September.
The two-day event will see two of the last remaining examples of LNWR steam power return to Blaenavon for the first time since the 1940s.
During the weekend of September 14 and 15, the railway, at Garn-yr-Erw will recreate this famous train pairing for a run from Blaenavon to the Whistle Inn
Alex Hinshelwood, the railways traffic manager, for Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway said: “We're all excited about this event, bringing two of the last surviving LNWR engines back to South Wales is something we've talked about for a long time. It's made extra special by 1054 being a local engine and we hope recreating the Heads of the Valleys last train will bring back a few memories”.
