HELP is at hand for Gwent dog owners who are at the end of their lead with their disobedient pets.

Abergavenny’s Isabel Chesney’s refreshing take on canine behaviour offers a chance for owners to connect with their pet on a fundamental level.

She explained that it can bring harmony to homes that are terrorised by a delinquent dog.

Dog whispering is a new and exciting brand of therapy, and Mrs Chesney says that she has witnessed the method bringing success where more traditional methods have failed.

Her relationship with dogs began late in life, when ten years ago she and her husband took the step to adopt a retired Greyhound and this perked her interest in dog training.

She was not sure about traditional methods and was intrigued when she found out about whispering.

Her inspiration came when she watched the American television guru Ceaser Milan and his program The Dog Whisperer, and she was fascinated by what she saw.

The more she studied Mr Milan’s method she found that she was able to influence her dog’s behaviour in more and more ways.

Mrs Chesney had had no previous experience with dogs but found that once she began using the whispering method she developed a close affinity with her pet.

She said that the problem is often the owner and not the dog, adding: "Bad behaviour is down to the owner, and people are often reluctant to take charge.

“A dog needs a leader, it’s in their nature."

Her work shapes the owner into a figure that the dog can understand.

She explained how tiny changes in human behaviour can have a huge impact on a dog, with fear being a particular problem for those who are unsure of being with dogs.

She said: "fear in a human is a trigger for an unbalanced dogs, and by changing your behaviour you can dramatically influence a dog."

One satisfied customer is Sue Dobson of Glangrwyney.

She was struggling with her daughter’s three and a half year old Jack Russell cross, Reggie.

But she found that just one session with Mrs Chesney was enough to calm the boisterous dog down.

She said: "My husband and daughter said I was wasting my money, but after one visit he was brilliant.

"They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but you can."
