MEET John Donovan - the 106-year-old who could well be Britain's oldest shopper.

Former tram driver Mr Donovan, of Newport, who was born on August 19, 1907, celebrated his 106th birthday at Glynanwen home, making him one of Britain's oldest men.

Despite his age Mr Donovan still shops in Newport Sainsbury’s every week accompanied by his daughter Susan Ireland.

Mr Donovan is the store's oldest customer and so he was invited by staff to the customer restaurant, where he eats regularly, and was provided with a free meal.

The store also presented Mr Donovan with a bottle of sherry, and a chocolate cake.

Mr Donovan said “I always shop in Sainsbury’s because I like the quality.

“You don’t live this long eating rubbish.”

Mr Donovan who gets a taxi to the store to do his weekly grocery shop on Thursday, Friday or Saturday evenings, says his age hasn't affected his ability to go out and do things.

“Life at 106 is very different, there is not a dull moment in my life.

“It is no trouble to do anything within reason.

“I get my own breakfast and I do my own washing - I am enjoying life.

“I have no complaints, I have my good health and that is the foundation of a good long life.

"My age is inrelevant, as I can still talk to people sensibly.

“I have very comfortable accommodation and the staff are very concerned and respectful towards residents.”

One of the highlights of the Second World War veteran's week is the trip to the supermarket.

“I do a lot of reading and a lot of sleeping, but I go to Sainsbury’s once a week, said the RAF veteran who was stationed in Burma and India.

“When I go with my daughter, I am in charge of the trolley and she helps me to fill it, and she puts the food away.

“I am very fond of cheese, I like the reddish one, and I am also very fond of vegetables, I love all vegetables, particularly carrots.

“My favourite meal each day is prunes – I have them every morning.

“I don’t get a lot of exercise but the prunes make me feel healthy.

“I also try to have a banana every day.”

Other items on Mr Donovan’s shopping list include jam tarts and his favourite - Mr Kipling’s farmhouse cake.

“I find the trip to the supermarket exciting and we always eat in the café,” he adds.

“The food us always nice and served piping hot.

“I always get a cheese omelette and chips- it is a lovely meal.”
