RUPERRA Castle in Draethen near Newport will offer a free guided walk on Sunday, September 1, as part of the annual Open Doors programme.

Hundreds of attractions across Gwent will offer free entry, activities or events throughout September, with some unique buildings even opening their doors to the public for the very first time.

The event is being organised by the Civic Trust for Wales and supported by Cadw, the Welsh Government’s historic environment service.

Ruperra, which was built in 1626 by Sir Thomas Morgan of Machen, is unique in Wales as a Jacobean chivalric castle. Morgan was an official of the earls of Pembroke, and Ruperra became a focus both for Renaissance culture and traditional Welsh poetry and music.

The castle was struck by fire in 1941, at which time it was used as a billet.

The Ruperra Preservation has since aimed to consolidate a working farm which once provided the food for the Morgan family at the castle.

John Griffiths, Minster for Culture and Sport, said: “Open Doors is an excellent scheme which aims to make Wales’s heritage more accessible and appealing to a wide range of audiences to explore and enjoy.”

Anna Lermon, Project Officer at The Civic Trust for Wales, said: “Many people would be surprised by what is hidden on their own doorstep so Open Doors is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to explore their local heritage.”

The programme is part of European Heritage Days which take place throughout September across 50 countries in a celebration of architecture and heritage.

The walk and talk will take place between 2pm and 5pm. Pre-booking is required, contact 01656 741622 for more information.
