A VALLEYS man who took drink and drugs before making a hoax call to police has been given a conditional discharge.

Appearing before Cwmbran Magistrates Court today via video link from prison, Keiron Lee Saunders, 18, of Sycamore Avenue, Tredegar, admitted making one of four false telephone calls to the police along with his cousin on the evening of August 28 in Tredegar.

Robert Simkins, prosecuting, said Saunders and his cousin called police at 3.55pm to falsely report that two boys were assaulting a woman; at 4.32pm that two men had broken into a church; at 6.05pm that two boys with knives and a bag of money had kicked the chapel door through; and later that two boys had broken in to "the OAP place".

Mr Simkins said the defendant and his cousin were under the influence of drink and drugs and were arrested by police shortly after making the fourth call.

When police officers dialled the number who had made the false reports, Saunders' cousin's phone rang, the court heard.

Mr Simkins said both men had taken so much of the substances that they were taken to Ystrad Mynach and later Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil.

Saunders was interviewed when fit and admitted making one of the calls, and said he had "a bit of a head on" when he made it.

He told officers he didn't get anything of it but knew it was an offence.

Patrick Meadows, mitigating, said Saunders accepted he and his cousin had "consumed a considerable amount of drink and drugs" and he accepted responsibility for making "a single hoax call". The court did not hear which of the four calls Saunders made.

Magistrates gave Saunders a two-year conditional discharge for the offence and ordered that he pay a £15 victim surcharge.

Saunders was recalled to prison on July 29 after serving half a two-year sentence for arson. He must now serve the rest of the sentence.
