A BRONZE plaque will be unveiled in Caerphilly on Saturday in memory of one of the town’s most famous sons.
Malcolm Uphill was the first man to average over 100 mph for a lap of the Isle of Man TT on a production bike. He did this in winning the 750cc production class on a Triumph Bonneville in 1969. Dunlop named the TT 100 tyre after his lap that averaged 100.39 mph, while in a 14 year career Mr Uphill won the production class at the Isle of Man TT in 1969 and 1970 plus a double victory in the 1965 Manx Grand Prix.
He died in 1999 aged 64 from asbestosis. Pub chain Wetherspoon’s recognised him two years ago when they named their new venue on Cardiff Road, Caerphilly, The Malcolm Uphill.
Friends and supporters have also been raising funds for another lasting memorial and collected £2,500.
This has paid for metre square bronze plaque that will be placed on the wall at Station Square, opposite the pub, on Saturday.
The unveiling starts at 11am, when MP Wayne David will be present and also one of Mr Uphill’s bikes.
