The Gwent man knocked down and killed while crossing the Ely Valley Road last Thursday was yesterday named as Stephen Owens.

Family described him as a “happy go lucky” person who leaves behind a devoted father John Owens and two daughters, Natalie and Kirsty.

Mr Owens, 42, from Newbridge, was hit by a brown Seat Ibiza as he was walking across the road between Coed Ely and Thomastown at around 9.15pm on August 29.

He was taken to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital but staff were not able to save him.

His father John said: "Stephen as a young man was an honest, fun and likeable boy. I as his father will unconditionally love him for the rest of my life."

Natalie and Kirsty, his two daughters, added: “It's sad to say goodbye so soon. We always hoped that one day you would be a bigger part of our lives but we will always remember and love you as the father you once were. Love Natalie and Kirsty. You’re safe now, rest in peace. XXX”

Family released a photograph of Mr Owens showing him cradling one of his daughters.

Officers investigating the crash are still appealing for people with information to come forward.

They are eager to speak with anyone who may have seen the car or the pedestrian in the moments leading up to the collision.
