A GROUP of Blaenau Gwent youngsters emerged more confident and able to coach their peers this summer following a free football project.
In total 16 young people between 14 and 19 embarked on the scheme, run through the PreVENT 14 to 19 scheme and Blaenau Gwent Council’s youth service.
Designed to improve their confidence, self esteem, team working and basic skills, the project ran throughout the summer at Abertillery Sports Centre’s 3G pitch and gave them the opportunity to learn new football playing and coaching skills. Sessions were free and free transport was also provided to those who needed it.
Expert coaching came from Derek Brazil, a former Manchester United and Cardiff City player who has a number of UEFA coaching licences.
Mr Brazil, his team, and PreVENT staff worked together to prepare the youngsters for a match against a joint Careers Wales and a Blaenau Gwent Council team, as well as helping them to coach their peers.
At the end of the scheme the group were given a free tour of Cardiff City’s stadium and took part in a training session with one of the club's own development coaches.
17-year-old Jake Pascoe from Abertillery said it was a "great opportunity to try coaching", while Jordan Llewellyn, also 17, from Tredegar, said: "The project has helped me to improve my confidence."
Councillor Anita Hobbs, executive member for social services, children and active living, said she was delighted the scheme was such a success.
Pre-VENT 14-19 is a European funded project within Blaenau Gwent Council’s youth service.
Young people can either be referred or can self-refer onto the project and work voluntarily with the team whether on a one-to-one basis or in a group setting.
