TUESDAY night’s incident was not connected to other recent gun crime “in any way”, according chief inspector Huw Nicholas, who insisted that Newport remains a “very safe city”.

The chief insp said: “There have been a couple of incidents in Newport, but we are satisfied they are not connected in any way.

“These were members of the criminal of the fraternity while the other (fatal shooting at Seabreeze Avenue last month) was a domestic matter.

“The incident on Bank Street was a simple matter of geography, it happened here because those involved were travelling down the M4 corridor.”

Chief Insp Nicholas said the gun used in Tuesday’s incident has not yet been recovered, but it is believed a shot gun was used.

He said that there were reports of “several shots” being fired following an altercation involving people in two vehicles travelling from Somerton Road towards Chepstow Road.

Chief Insp Nicholas confirmed one vehicle had its back window damaged and it collided with the electricity box.

Three people were taken to hospital with injuries on Tuesday night, while there were two men in custody yesterday.

Chief Insp Nicholas confirmed that the force were still looking for other men and the other car. But, he wouldn’t say what those in custody had been arrested on suspicion of.

He also said Somerton Road would be closed into Wednesday night as investigations continued.
