A COOKERY roadshow is set to visit Gwent as part of a nationwide campaign to help stop food wastage.
For the second year running, the Love Food Hate Waste roadshow, led by TV chef Richard Fox, will show members of the public how to make meals from ingredients they usually throw away.
The roadshow, organised by Waste Awareness Wales, will visit 21 locations across Wales including Newport, Torfaen and Blaenau Gwent.
It will visit Torfaen on Thursday, September 26, and Blaenau Gwent on Friday, October 4, with both locations yet to be confirmed. The show will also visit Newport Food Festival on Saturday, October 5.
Live cookery demonstrations and practical advice on how to plan meals will be given, work out portion sizes, understand date labels and store food correctly to make it last longer.
Lyndsey Stewart, from Waste Awareness Wales, said: “In Wales we throw away around 400,000 tonnes of good food and drink each year, just from our homes – that’s about £12 billion, costing the average family £50 a month. This is a staggering amount, especially when you consider that most of it is, or once was, perfectly good food that could have been eaten.”
Celebrity chef Richard Fox has years of experience and is the food waste expert on Channel 4’s Supper Scrimpers.
He has also appeared on UKTV Food, Saturday Cooks on ITV, and The Good Food Show on BBC Radio 4.
Mr Fox said: “I’ve got loads of great hints and tips to help you make the most of your left over foods and I’ll show you some great ways to make your food go further. Plus I’ll be cooking up some tasty recipes for you to try”
Alun Davies, the Minister for Natural Resources and Food, said: “People can lack the confidence or the know-how to turn leftovers into nutritious and tasty meals. The road show will help people right across Wales learn about the many simple things they can do to make the most of the food in their fridge in order to save money and waste less.”
