POLICE have been granted extra time to question a man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following the shooting in Chepstow Road, Newport.

Magistrates granted a warrant of further detention yesterday evening so officers could continue questioning the 22-year-old from Newport who was arrested on Friday.

He remains in police custody assisting officers with their enquiries.

A 24-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following the incident has been bailed by police pending further enquries.

Two men from Cardiff, aged 22 and 24, arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of controlled drugs have previously been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

The incident happened at around 11.30pm on Tuesday just after bar workers at the Cross Hands Hotel, in Chepstow Road, had called last orders.

Witnesses described three alleged victims running from the scene in Somerton Road, one of them bleeding.

Gwent police chief inspector Huw Nicholas said gunshots were fired following an altercation involving people in two vehicles and all parties involved were known to one another.

Three people were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers are continuing to make enquiries to locate the firearm used in the incident, as well as a dark coloured 4x4 jeep type vehicle that was seen driving along Chepstow Road and onto Beechwood Road in the direction of St Julians and Christchurch.
