A THIRD man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following last week’s shooting incident in Newport.

Armed police were sent to Elaine Crescent, St Julians, this afternoon after officers investigating Tuesday’s incident in Chepstow Road executed a warrant.

A 24-year-old man, from Newport, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

This came as police were granted a warrant of further detention by magistrates on Saturday evening to continue questioning a 22-year-old Newport man who was arrested on Friday on suspicion of attempted murder.

Both remain in police custody assisting officers with their enquiries.

A 24-year-old man who was previously arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following the incident has been bailed by police pending further enquiries.

Two men from Cardiff, aged 22 and 24, arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of controlled drugs have previously been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Residents in Elaine Crescent described how the road was blocked off by police with vehicles with people being told to stay indoors at around 1pm.

The arrest was then made at around 3pm with the man being handcuffed in the street.

Residents said several police vehicles had turned up along with armed police officers and a police dog.

A police helicopter was also in the area with police seen at the front and back of a property in the street.

One eyewitness said four armed police were seen facing a property in the street.

Neighbours said no shots were fired but described their shock at the incident.

One man said: "It's a bit unsettling. You don't expect this on your doorstep."

Another woman added: "It's obviously shocked us as we live in the same street."

A police helicopter was also seen in the area at the time of the incident.

Officers are continuing to make enquiries to locate the firearm used in the incident in Chepstow Road, as well as a dark coloured 4x4 jeep type vehicle that was seen driving along Chepstow Road and onto Beechwood Road in the direction of St Julians and Christchurch.

Anyone in the area between 11pm and midnight on September 3 who has information relating to the vehicle or the incident, should call 101 quoting log 586 03/09/13 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555.
