Musical Newport volunteer nominated for award

Claire Cowper, 51, of Newport has been running the popular music group Sounds Fun, at St Anne’s Church, Rogerstone, for the past 13 years.

The group for newborn babies and toddlers aims to engage children in learning through music.

Mrs Cowper’s nomination comes as one of the last in a series of nominations for the Newport Night of Honour Awards, and she is in for the chance of winning the title at a ceremony on September 22.

The Kings Church has teamed up with Argus for the third year running to find people and organisations that have gone the extra mile to help others.

The eight categories include; the above and beyond award, public service superhero award, parent of the year, volunteer of the year; and community organisation of the year.

Mrs Cowper was nominated by parent Claire Fitchie whose children went to the group.

She said: “She is there rain or shine, on her only day off. I took my first child there when he was six months old and since then I have taken all four of my children at some stage or another. They love the songs, the interaction, the instruments and especially the biscuits afterwards.

“Claire has a great memory, always remembers the names of the children, even when the group is full to capacity. She always provides a listening ear, loves to chat and is a kind, lovely lady. I know she also gives her time to other worthwhile groups (the WI), as well as being a mum, wife and business owner.”

Mrs Cowper fits her volunteering work alongside her business, Marda Associates, teaching people to use computers.

She said: “I started the group 13 years ago along with friend Carole Lostus. I do all the singing while Carole does the important back room stuff. We started the group as we felt that there was a need for something for mums and babies to together. I am really surprised to be nominated for this award.

“I don’t ask for any recognition it is just really rewarding to work with the children – they really cheer you up.”
