THEATRE group New Venture Players are returning to The Dolman Theatre next month with their new musical comedy, Avenue Q.
The musical described as an adult version of children’s favourite Sesame Street, tackles issues such as homosexuality and racism, along with adult humour.
The show starring 11 puppets, with main characters Jess Jones, as Kate Monster, and Ben Hurley, as Princeton, will run from October 2 to 5 at The Dolman Theatre, Newport.
The group, which has been running for 40 years, needs around £15,000 to put on a show, and hopes that the Newport public will support them by coming to see their latest show.
The musical, directed by Gordon Collins, that tells the timeless story of a recent college graduate named Princeton who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q.
There, he meets characters such as Kate, the girl next door; Rod, the Republican and other colourful types who help Princeton finally discover his purpose in life.
Debbie Postle who stars in the show as Christmas Eve said: “The show parodies Sesame Street which is known for being all fluffy and nice; giving children the message that everything in life is great.
“But Avenue Q is a spin off that and shows how life doesn’t always give you a good hand, while tackling themes such as homosexuality and racism.”
The show contains adult humour that is not suitable for children.
Performances start at 7:15pm.
Tickets cost £10.
