A DUFFRYN maths teacher is making waves in education with a series of ‘how to’ videos that are inspiring pupils.
Rob Gregory, 35, has motivated pupils to adopt a more hands on approach to maths with his idea of getting pupils to star in ‘how to’ maths videos which showcase their skills to help teach their peers tricky subjects such as long division and long multiplication.
The video project which started at Duffryn High School, Newport, earlier this year has been successful in minimising the confusion between various mathematical techniques.
Mr Gregory who has been numeracy coordinator at the school for the past five years said: "It is all about the consistency of techniques.
"Since I was at school the techniques for basic numeracy skills have changed dramatically and we are using the videos to try and avoid pupils taking their homework to mum and dad and being confused by different techniques.
“We get feedback from the parents about not being able to help pupils with their homework due to different techniques but this is an effective way of showing current methods.”
Pupils from years eight , nine and ten have gotten involved in the video project giving up their lunch times to film themselves explaining different sums to their peers.
The videos are then shown on the schools website to enable easy access for both parents and pupils.
Mr Gregory added:” The pupils such as year tens Jake Thomas and Daniel Manchee have been superb.
“They have been really enthusiastic and confident in front of the camera as they have done you tube type films before.
“We have started with some basic tips and there are plans to do harder topics in the future.”
