TWO Newport teens have been recognised for their work with young people in the community with a Newport Night of Honour Award.
Joseph Burton, 17, and Josh Wood, 17, have been nominated for the Young Champion of the Year award for their volunteer work in running the Kings Generation Youth on a Friday night.
The Kings Church has teamed up with Argus for the third year running to find people and organisations that have gone the extra mile to help others.
The eight categories include; the above and beyond award, public service superhero award, parent of the year, volunteer of the year; and community organisation of the year.
The boys nomination comes as one of the last in a series of nominations for the Newport Night of Honour Awards, and they are in for the chance of winning the title at a ceremony which will take place on September 22.
Their nominator Heath van Staden said: “These two young men are passionate about their generation.
“In their spare time they can be found at Kings Generation, preparing, volunteering in the day to day activities of the organisation.
“They also both volunteer in the holiday children's program, working as part of a team to deliver excellent children's provisions.
“The young men are fun, full of passion, dedicated and always remain teachable.
“Their desire is to constantly learn, grow and serve.
“They both have a passion for music and play in both the youth and full bands at Kings Church.”
The pair runs the youth provision for over 70 people, which aims to deliver a program which incorporates games, group work, teaching and workshops.
They are also involved in developing young musicians, who then play at various youth nights and events.
Alongside this the friends are part of Newport Youth Council where they work to give young people an active voice in their community.
Joseph, who is doing his A levels at ST. Joseph's High School, said: “We have been volunteering together for about three years now about three times a week.
“We volunteer for the youth club at the church as well as organising Infusion Events where we invite people from schools to get involved in music.
“We are also involved in Newport Youth Council which gets young people aged 11 to 25 together to discuss issues and matters arising in Newport.
“I think it is really cool to be nominated for this award.
“It is really nice to be recognised for the work we do.”
Josh who is studying music at Cross Keys College and is in his second year added: “We help out at the Youth Council and really enjoy doing that.
“I also enjoy working in the Youth Group because I was in it myself when I was younger so it’s nice to go back and help out.”
