A BLAENAVON student has been accepted into Oxford University to study medicine.
Jessica Whiting, 18, from Capel Newydd, faced tough competition but managed to get a place on the university’s prestigious medicine degree.
Miss Whiting said she was “excited and nervous” when she received the offer.
She had decided to become a doctor two years ago after some uncertainty over her future career path.
She is the first in her family to study at Oxford University and has recently finished studying at St Albans secondary school.
Oxford University is internationally recognised for its high-quality academic courses as well as its teaching and research in biomedicine.
The university is regularly ranked in the top three universities in the UK and top 10 worldwide.
Competition for places on the undergraduate course is very high; over 1,000 UCAS applications by medicine applicants are received each year.
Around 425 applicants are shortlisted for interview and around 150 are given an offer.
Miss Whiting chose Oxford as one of her UCAS choices but never thought that she was likely to receive an offer.
She had also applied to Cardiff, Imperial College London and St George’s, and University of London.
