TENS of thousands visitors are expected to make their way to Usk this Saturday for the 169th Usk Show.
Every year since 1844, Usk Farmers’ Club has hosted the show to celebrate the very best of Monmouthshire farming and rural life.
Its popularity is second to none and it has become one of the biggest one-day agricultural shows, attracting around 20,000 visitors.
At its 100-acre site near the village of Gwernesney, just outside Usk, it currently comprises 11 different sections, each holding their own competitions on the day.
This year's event will see Usk Farmers Club members bring their cattle, sheep and pigs to compete in the agriculture section.
There will also be a thriving horse show and show jumping competitions, as well as goats, poultry, rabbits, horticulture, a dog show and vintage tractors.
Ceri Goring, 53, has spent 15 years as the secretary of horticulture at the Usk Show.
She explained that the show is fortunate in having some highly skilled gardeners in the locality who bring amazing produce to the show, year after year.
The show normally has between 30 and 40 competitors, with some entering a large number of classes and others exhibiting in just one or two.
However, she said that she is keen to promote first-time competitors to the show too.
She said: “You only learn once you have started entering so my advice is to just give it a go.”
She added: “The week leading up to the show is always the busiest, with me taking entries and setting up the marquee.
“But it looks like we can expect another successful year and I hope to see everyone there.”
