A 64-YEAR-OLD man who failed to give his information to another driver after a crash has been ordered to pay more than £300.

Paul Wakefield, of Cwrdy Road, Griffithstown, Pontypool, admitted the offence which happened when he was turning a corner in his silver MG and hit a red Vauxhall Astra on The Avenue, Pontypool, on August 25.

Appearing at Cwmbran Magistrates Court yesterday, prosecutor Robert Simkins said that at 5.55pm on the day in question, the Astra was stationary and about to turn right, and the defendant was in the act of turning right when he collided with the Astra.

The male driver and his female passenger, who was eight weeks pregnant, got out, as did Wakefield, but he did not pass on his insurance details and drove away.

The pair later went to Newport's Royal Gwent Hospital where it was discovered that the woman had miscarried.

Wakefield failed a roadside breath test for alcohol but later passed the test at the police station, he said.

Andrea Nash-Harding, mitigating, said Wakefield, who had held a clean driving licence for 36 years and had not appeared in court before, had only just found out the woman had miscarried and it had caused him "a high level of distress", adding that there was "absolutely no evidential link" to say that the woman miscarried as a result of being in the car during the collision.

She said there were no damage or personal injury claims following the collision and no reports of physical injury at the time of the incident.

Magistrates fined Wakefield £275 and he must pay £35 costs and a £28 victim surcharge.

His licence was endorsed with five penalty points.
