A BLACKWOOD woman has thanked an honest mystery shopper who handed in her misplaced handbag containing more than £500 at a supermarket.

Janet Hagerty, 58, visited the store at around midday on the last Thursday of last month before her shift at South Street Surgery in Bargoed.

She said: “I popped in to get some salad. Then I saw a microwave on offer and decided to buy it. The security tag didn’t work so the girl took it away to another counter, so I must’ve paid for my salad and left my handbag there to go over to the other counter.

“My life was in there; my phone, car keys, money, everything.

“What panicked me was I had £370 belonging to my daughter in the bag, because I’d been to cash a cheque for her. That’s why I was more worried, because most of it wasn’t even my money.

“In all I had around £500 in cash in there.

“When it happened, I had a brain-freeze and couldn’t think straight. We couldn’t find it anywhere.”

But after a few minutes of searching, the bag had been found, with nothing stolen.

Ms Hagerty said: “The lady went over to the information desk and it had been handed in. An opportunist would have taken the money because it was in a separate pocket and wasn’t zipped up.

“It was my own fault and it only happened for a few minutes but I’m just really grateful. The girl at the checkout was marvellous as well.

“It’s nice to know that there are nice people around, I was very lucky someone was good enough to do that for me. It would just be very nice to thank the person who handed my bag in.”
