RISCA Community Comprehensive School is open again today after it remained closed for a second day yesterday because of a problem with its water supply.
The Argus reported yesterday that the school was forced to close on Tuesday after one of the water pumps which sends water up to the school failed.
As a result, the school had no water to drink, wash with or use to flush the toilets.
Legally, the school must have a supply of clean drinking water and requires sanitary facilities in order to open under the Education Premises Act.
Head teacher John Kendall explained the problem meant there was no water supply in the school or the leisure centre.
The problem could not be be repaired within a few hours.
This therefore meant the decision was taken to close the building for health and safety reasons at 11am.
He said: “Having to close the school is not something we take lightly, but we had to make a decision, and really this shows how fantastic social media can be.
“We were able to tell parents within minutes through our Facebook and Twitter sites.”
In a statement, released just before 11am yesterday, Mr Kendall said: “Unfortunately it has not yet been possible for the water pumping system to be repaired, and the school will therefore remain closed for the remainder of the day.
He advised pupils to complete the work posted by teachers on Edmodo or on its Moodle.
He added: “We apologise for any inconvenience this continues to cause and thank you for your understanding.
“Please be assured we are doing our best to remedy this as soon as possible.”
A further update was then released yesterday at 5.30pm.
It said the water pumping system had now been repaired and the school would reopen today as normal.
