A FUNDRAISING walk in memory of a much-loved Chepstow woman will take place next month.

The Chepstow and Caldicot Lions hope to get as many members, partners, supporters and friends as they can to walk along a six-and-a-half-mile stretch of the Wales Coastal Path to raise money for local causes and pay tribute to the late Kath Gibby, who died aged 67, last month following a long illness.

The retired nurse and mother-of-three grown up children was the wife of Nigel Gibby, who is the president of the Chepstow and Caldicot Lions.

She was a keen supporter of the club and of the organisations it has helped over the years.

Mr Gibby, 69, said: “Possibly influenced by a career in nursing, Kath always particularly favoured the work done at Chepstow Hospital, which included supporting the Chepstow Stroke Club, providing patients with gifts at Christmas and donating much-needed equipment to the hospital."

Chepstow and Caldicot Lions was formed in 1971 by local businessmen and raises around £10,000 a year for local projects including SARA, the scouts, guides and Chepstow Community Hospital and internationally at an eye camp in India and a water well project in Africa.

The ‘Kath Gibby’ Memorial Coastal Path Walk will leave from the bandstand on the Wye river bank, Chepstow, and finish at Black Rock, Portskewett.

Walkers are encouraged to wear fancy with prizes awarded to the best dressed adult and to the best dressed child under 12.

David Flint, the club’s fundraising officer, said Kathy was a great supporter of the club.

He said: “I am certain that Kathy would be embarrassed by this walk, yet pleased funds were being raised to help support local causes.”

The walk starts at 2pm on October 5 with registration from 1.30pm. The entry fee is £5.

Those who want to walk a shorter distance can start from Thornwell or Bulwark.
