THREE people have been arrested on suspicion of child abduction after a crash in Newport on Tuesday.

Gwent Police were called to Liverpool Street at around 12.45pm and police were hunting the occupants of the car after it failed to stop.

A 24-year-old woman has since been arrested on suspicion of child abduction and assault, but was released on police bail until Thursday morning.

A man, 34, has been arrested on suspicion of child abduction and is still in police custody.

A 39-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of child abduction, false imprisonment and assault and also remains in police custody.

The woman who suffered head injuries, and who is in her thirties, was taken to hospital following the incident but has since been discharged.

Victoria councillor Chris Jenkins, who lives opposite to Liverpool Street where the incident took place, said there is no reason for the local community to worry despite a “lot of police” having been at the scene.

Cllr Jenkins said: “It’s quite dramatic when you see an ambulance and five police cars there and the street being closed off. It’s a very quiet place so it’s a bit of a shock.

“But it was very calm, there’s nothing for the community to worry about – it was one household where things got out of hand. It was very well handled by the police.”
