SAFETY wardens in Caerphilly have been given an extension to their existing powers after being accredited by the Chief Constable of Gwent Police.
Caerphilly County Borough Council community safety wardens will now be able to issues penalty notices for disorder for offences known as “proxy sales”, which is when an adult purchases alcohol for someone under the legal age limit.
The new accreditation also means wardens will be able to seize fireworks from people under the age of 18.
Cllr Dave Poole, council cabinet member for community and leisure services, said: “Our community safety wardens play a vital role helping to make our borough a safer place.”
Chief Inspector Simon Jeffries, of Gwent Police, said: “By administering the community safety accreditation initiative, Gwent Police are continuing to work with partners to expand the policing family to provide speedy, quick and effective justice.
“The additional powers are very welcome at this time of the year and we look forward to working closely with the wardens.”
