A MAN who climbed on top of a Newport roof earlier this month and began throwing slates at the police, has been jailed for 20 weeks.

Luke Orford, 25, from Newport, was charged with two counts of criminal damage, burglary and public order on September 12.

He appeared at Cwmbran Magistrates’ the next day, where he was sentenced to 20 weeks imprisonment for criminal damage, and eight weeks for burglary to run concurrently. There were no separate sentences for public order offences.

Fire service, police and ambulances were called to the scene at St Julian’s Road on Tuesday, September 10 and cordoned off the area. Pupils at the nearby St Julian’s School were kept in school until the man had been brought to safety.

Orford, who at times had his T-shirt over his head, was seen moving around and even standing on the chimney and gesturing to onlookers on the street below.

He was taken to hospital after the incident for precautionary checks but was later remanded in custody.
