STYLISH and spacious was how the new magistrates' court in Newport was described, as it opened for the first time today.

Spread over three floors, the £13m courthouse is bright and airy with a glazed entrance, large sitting areas and imposing views of the SDR Bridge and the city centre.

The four court rooms are roomy too, with dedicated areas for the prosecution and defence, probation, magistrates and the public.

Crown prosecutor Ruth Hale called the new building "impressive", which replaces the old court at Newport Civic Centre which closed last year.

Solicitor Ian George told me the magistrates’ court was “vast”, jokingly adding he might have to cancel his gym membership because of the steep flights of stairs.

HM Courts & Tribunals Service said the court had “first class” facilities including secure docks, external video links and was wired to enable digital working for all criminal justice agencies including defence solicitors.

In addition, Ministry of Justice officials stressed the court would deal with the “full range of criminal work” and could also accommodate tribunal hearings.

HMCTS Wales delivery director Luigi Strinati said: “This new court demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that court users have access to a first-class justice centres which deliver the level of customer service they expect.

“The building provides superior accommodation and better facilities for victims and witnesses.”
