CHEPSTOW councillors are dismayed by a decision not to support cutting the A48’s speed limit.

The town council sent a petition of around 1,000 signatures to the Assembly calling for the speed limit on the A48 Bridge at Chepstow to drop from 50mph to 30mph.

A review has since completed and Edwina Hart, minister for economy, science and transpor, has made her recommendation to the petitions committee - saying the current limit should be retained.

Members of the town council were disappointed by the news.

Speaking at a council meeting last week, Cllr Dale Rooke said the people of Chepstow’s point of view should be considered over the minister’s because they know the town better.

Cllr Jane Robbins said: “This is most definitely not a safe route to school but it is being used as one.”

Cllr Armand Watts, added: “One day we are going to be sat here where there’s going to be another tragic event.”

The minister’s recommendation will be considered by the petitions committee on October 8 at the Senedd.
