MUSIC workshops run by a man who once faced hardship are helping unemployed people in the Valleys.

Kevin Webb, 47, knows how it feels to struggle, as in his twenties he found himself homeless on the streets of Texas.

Back in the UK some years later, he set up a business All About Guitars, which delivers musical workshop projects with music industry professionals.

He believes he is possibly the only trader who was successful in receiving a WCVA Engagement Gateway award with grant funding from the European Social Fund, to help unemployed and economically inactive people in Torfaen and Blaenau Gwent.

On September 30, he started an eight week programme at Emmaus Chapel, Torfaen Terrace, Pontnewynydd, which uses music as a vehicle for developing entrepreneurial skills and mindsets.

Mr Webb said: “This really is a blessing for everyone, I had no idea things would develop so much. Using music for personal, social and financial well-being is just the best thing ever.”

“All barriers where possible are removed to enable the candidates to engage in the program and in the music-based activities. People don’t need to be able to play an instrument, and it opens them up to a world and lifestyle that is more healthier for some folk.”

Twenty candidates can select courses from guitar repair servicing to radio production.

They are receiving personal volunteer mentoring, create a portfolio and learn from guest speakers.

All About Guitars has rented the chapel, decorating it inside and out and making it usable again.

Able Radio, Torfilms,Torfaen MIND, Cardiff Radio and the University of South Wales are just some of the scheme’s supporters.
