AN ABERGAVENNY eaterie was named as the best restaurant in Wales in the 2013 National Restaurant Awards for the second year running.

The Hardwick, run by chef Stephen Terry and his wife Joanna, won the accolade at the award ceremony which took place in London on Monday.

The sixth national restaurant awards, held at The Brewery, celebrate the 100 best places to eat out in the UK, and are voted for by a team of 150 chefs, restaurateurs, food critics and journalists.

The restaurant was one of three from Wales named in the list of the UK’s top 100 places to eat and ranked 20th (above Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir au Quat’ Saisons which is listed at 22) and The Walnut Tree, at Llandewi Skirrid, run by Shaun Hill which took 28th place on the list.

Mr Terry, 46, who has worked under Marco Pierre White at Harveys and Le Gavroche, under Michel Roux Jnr, paid tribute to his staff via twitter after the ceremony.

He said: “You’re only as good as the people you work with!”

The overall winner was The Hand and Flowers in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, run by TV chef Tom Kerridge, was named restaurant of the year and gastropub of the year
