A spokesperson from Dwr Cymru Welsh Water confirmed that the damage to the road was caused by a collapsed sewer. The said they temporarily closed the road in order to safely carry out a repair, adding: “We will be completing this work as quickly as possible and we would like to thank residents in advance for their patience while we complete this essential repair.”
UPDATE: 11.56am
While the hole in the tarmac surface is about 2ft x 3ft, beneath is large space, at least 6ft deep, big enough to fit a small car.
Sewage water can be seen running along the bottom.
Earlier this morning a bin was placed on top of the hole.
Ray Hill, a landlord for a property in the road, said: “Someone must have discovered the hole and for safety, put my wheelie bin across it.

Pat Wright, who lives in Tunnel Terrace, saw the hole at around 8am when she pulled up her blinds.
She said: “It’s a colossal cavern. If could have swollen up an entire car.
“I’m worried about the state of sewage in this area. I’m worried thinking about my house – I’ve got a basement.
“It’s a very big hole. More than big enough to fit a car.”
The road remains closed and Welsh Water have confirmed a team are on their way to investigate.
UPDATE: 10.52am
A HOLE has appeared in the road on Tunnel Terrace in the Baneswell area of Newport this morning.
Council workers arrived at about 8.50am to cordon off the top of the street near the junction with Kingsmill Terrace.
The area is over the railway tunnel on the main line to Cardiff.
