The Nutcracker on Ice
Wales Millennium Centre
Christmas may still be well over a month away but after witnessing the opening night of The Imperial Ice Stars production of The Nutcracker on Ice on Friday evening, it was impossible not to walk away feeling a tiny bit seasonal.
The combination of Tchaikovsky’s music, colourfully designed sets and stunningly choreographed ice dance routines incorporating acrobatics, illusions, and beautiful costumes mesmerised every generation of the audience.
The production team headed by producers James Cundall and Tony Mercer have worked hard to make a usually a dark story light and accessible for all age groups, resulting in a magical treat that is as appeasing to the eye as to the ear.
The Imperial Ice stars consisting of a 26-strong cast of Olympic, World, European and National Championship skaters lead by Maria Mukhortova (as Marie) and Bogdan Berezenko (as The Nutcracker Prince) effortlessly deliver an adrenaline fuelled performance with flair and intricacy.
Russian Ice Star Olga Sharutenko is joined by Dancing on Ice partner Keith Chegwin to recreate the roles of the magicians that bring the story to life. While Sharutenko dazzles, Chegwin glides and glimmers displaying a great comical rapport with the company as well as the audience.
The shows highlight is undoubtedly the Grand Celebration of Dancing allowing the company to push the boundaries of ice dance theatre including stunning air dances and fiery acrobatic skills.
An early Christmas treat for the family (not recommended for the under 3s) The Nutcracker on Ice continues at Wales Millennium Centre until November 17.
