STUDENTS of Filipino descent and their school friends are raising hundreds of pounds for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan.
The pupils at St Joseph's High School in Pencarn Way, Newport, are collecting funds to help with the relief operation after the storm killed up to 10,000 people and left hundreds of thousands displaced.
St Joseph's acting head teacher Trevor Brown , 41, said: "It's a desperate situation.
"Staff, students and everyone involved in the school is deeply shocked by what's happened.
"We are now thinking and praying for those who lost their lives and livelihoods."
The 1,400-place school had already raised hundreds of pounds yesterday (Nov 13).
Funds will be distributed to the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development, which is helping with the relief operation in the Philippines.
Mr Brown added: "We have 42 students who are originally for the Philippines. It's something that is touching their lives."
