A MAN injured in a crash in Ponthir on Wednesday night which killed an 86-year-old woman remains in a critical but stable condition.
The man, who is also 86, has not yet been named.
A 20-year-old woman from the area who was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
Gwent Police is appealing for information following the incident, which involved a small blue hatchback vehicle and two pedestrians.
The collision occurred close to the village hall on the B4236 Caerleon Road at about 7.30pm.
Following the incident, the pair were taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital where the woman later died. She has been named as Joyce Drew. Officers are supporting her family at this time.
Officers are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact Gwent Police on 101 quoting log 411 13/11/13.
