BARNARDO’S Young Carers Project has been given a much needed boost after a cash injection from Tata Steel as part of its Future Generations fund.
The company, which has several sites in Newport, donated £1,000 which will help fund six months of weekly sporting sessions.
The Young Carers Project supports children and young people in Newport that provide regular care to family members.
Manager Clare Payne said: “We are so grateful for the donation. Our funds are limited so we are sometimes restricted with what we can offer. Thanks to Tata Steel we are now able to fund six months of multi-sports workshops for over 40 young people from across Newport.”
The workshops, delivered in partnership with Positive Futures Newport, are aimed at girls and boys and will include netball, basketball, football, dodgeball, rounders, cricket and touch rugby.
Positive Futures Newport helps young people aged 10 to 19. It’s a sports and activity based social inclusion programme, that works with partner agencies to give young people a positive focus in life.
Keith Farron, community liaison manager at Tata Steel, said: “We are delighted to be able to support the Young Carers Project in Newport.
“As part of our Future Generations programme we are committed to improving the health and wellbeing of young people in our local community.“By donating to the Newport Young Carers Project we hope we can make a difference to the lives of children who dedicate their lives to caring for others.”
