A NUMBER of residents in Newport’s Baneswell say they are fuming after bins for non-recyclable waste will be swapped with smaller ones in an effort to encourage people to recycle more.
Home owners will have at least six boxes and bags to recycle and dispose of rubbish in.
The current wheelie bins will be replaced by more slimline versions, while the authority is rolling out a new, reusable bag for cardboard.
West Street resident Lee Miskell, 38, an NHS worker, said: “I am unhappy about it. We have a four-year-old, so there is going to be a lot of rubbish, even though we do recycle.”
Sarah Goff, 34, a full-time mum, said: “I don’t see how it is going to work, as we recycle everything anyway.
“I have two small children so it’s going to be really hard.”
Resident Carol Vodden, 50, said: “I do recycle but there are people who don’t. I think it is a bad idea that will cause rats.”
Michael Rowland, 71, an art teacher said: “I think the council should cut out one collection a month: that would be better.”
Tom Casey, 54, of shop Wildlife, has been a Newport resident for 17 years and has had problems with fly-tipping.
“I think most people will be upset about it. We recycle as much as we can, but unless you have your lid shut, they won’t take the bin.”
The change comes after the city council failed to meet its recycling target of 52 per cent last year and is worried it could be fined up to £900,000 if it fails again this year.
However resident Maxine Rhodes, 46, a full-time mum, said: “I do all the recycling I can. I am in favour of the bins.”
Some 55,000 bins will be swapped by the council in five phase in 2014, with the cost estimated at £850,000. This should be recovered from savings achieved through increased recycling and reduced landfill.
Residents already have a rubbish bin, a green waste/cardboard bin, a food waste bin, a recycling box for cans, foil, and glass, a box for paper, textiles, catalogues and other items, and can use a clear bag for plastics.
Older bins will be recycled; newer ones reused for other projects. Residents will still face potential fines of £100-£5000 if they leave bags of rubbish at the side of their bins.
