HUNDREDS of people are expected to gather along Newport’s riverfront tonight for the annual countdown to Christmas event where the city’s lights will be switched on.

This year, Newport’s Mayor Councillor Cliff Suller will be joined by Newport Gwent Dragons player Kris Burton to officially switch-on the lights.

The Australian-born fly-half, who has played international rugby for Italy, joined the Dragons this season.

The Countdown to Christmas marks the start of Christmas celebrations in Newport and there will be a host of activities for pre-school children to enjoy in the afternoon before the fireworks in the evening. This is the second year running the event has taken place on the riverfront instead of the town centre.

From midday today an art station and children’s entertainer will be at The Riverfront Theatre and at 2pm Father Christmas will join them, who’ll be receiving letters and talking to children throughout the afternoon.

The line-up features Bjorn the Bear, a giant snow globe which you can step into and have a photo taken, pantomime cast capers and festive street entertainers appearing along the Wave area into the early evening.

Festive Minnie and Mickey as well as Christmas elves will also be popping in to say hello. The Riverfront Café will be open for hot drinks, food and snacks.

At 6.25pm the official countdown to Christmas will begin with an explosive firework show along the river and music from a fantastic band.

Danter's Fair will also be open throughout the evening along the riverfront walkway and retailers will be open until 8pm to start the Christmas shopping period.
