CHRISTMAS came to Newport in style as thousands packed out the riverfront to see the city’s lights switched on.
Organisers said around 5,000 people had turned out for the afternoon and evening of fun which saw Newport Mayor Cllr Cliff Suller, Newport Gwent Dragons player Kris Burton and Santa join forces to carry out the official duty of turning the lights on.
Fireworks, live music and pantomime dance entertainment added to the festive feel of the evening.
Cllr Suller said: “I think tonight has been marvellous. To see so many families here, I think that’s really magical. I hope people have a wonderful time.”
Australian-born fly-half Burton, who has played international rugby for Italy and joined the Dragons this season, added: “It’s been a great evening. “
Speaking about switching on the lights, he said: “It’s definitely something different, but it’s been a great atmosphere and a great turnout.”
The festive fun had started early on in the afternoon with activities for younger children including an art station and children’s entertainer at the Riverfront Theatre as well as a visit from Father Christmas and his elves.
A giant snow globe, a mechanical polar bear and a funfair also added to the atmosphere.
Trisha Jordan, of Newport said: “It’s been a good evening and has stayed nice and dry.”
Krista Teppett, of Newport, who was with her children Lexie, six, and Charlie, four months, said: “It’s been a great evening. The children went to see the polar bear and to see Santa.”
The activities continued after the big switch on with the fair on the riverfront and shops staying open later.
This is the second year running the event has taken place on the riverfront instead of the town centre.
