AN OBE has been awarded to the long-time owner of a well-known Blackwood bakery.

Colin Brace, who is 91, was awarded for his services to the baking industry and community in Wales for his achievements with family firm Brace’s Bakery Ltd, where he is still chairman.

His achievements were recognised during an official ceremony at Caerphilly council’s Penallta House headquarters yesterday, which saw Lord Lieutenant of Gwent Simon Boyle present Mr Brace with the honour.

Brace’s Bakery was founded in Blackwood in 1902 by Mr Brace’s grandfather George Brace. His grandson Colin joined the business in 1946 when he was demobbed following the end of the Second World War, and he went on to take control of the company in 1974.

Mr Brace said of his OBE: “I’m honoured and delighted to receive this OBE under such special circumstances with my family as witnesses. I can truly say that all my achievements over the years have been done without any hardship, I’ve enjoyed every single minute of it, and I will continue to play an active role in the day to day running of Brace’s Bakery.”

Mr Brace was also recognised for his support of causes in the local community, and for providing donations to schools, charities and sports groups.

He still plays an active role in the business, now operated by his sons Mark and Jonathan, who are the fourth generation of the Brace family to be at the helm of the bakery.

Mr Boyle, Lord Lieutenant of Gwent, said: “I congratulate Mr Brace on this OBE - a welcome reward for a man who has run an incredibly distinguished local bakery and has been a tremendously generous owner in supporting all sorts of local charities.”

Michael Gray, Mayor of Caerphilly county borough, said: “It has been a great privilege to host this special award ceremony, and on behalf of the council and the residents of Caerphilly county borough I would like to congratulate Mr Brace on his achievements and his sterling charitable work.”
