Q: I want to move my strawvberry plants to a new bed. What is the best way to do this?

A: Strawberry plants live for 4 or 5 years. The best way to move them to a new bed is to wait until the plants shoot new runners next summer. When these runners start to root themselves into the ground , dig them up and replant them in their new home

Q: I am about to plant out onion sets and garlic bulbs for next year. Should I wait for the cold spell to end?

A: Do not wait to plant your onion sets and garlic bulbs, especially garlic, get them straight into the ground now before its starts to freeze. Select a position in full sun where they will not be shaded by other plants. For onion sets the soil needs to be well drained, loose and rich in nitrogen. You can add nitrogen fertiliser at the time of planting for the best crop.

Q: Do I need to cover my pea saplings against frost or are they pretty hardy?

A: Pea saplings would benefit from a covering of gardening fleece to protect from the frost and cold.

Q: How do I get rid of invasive betony?

A: If the betony still has green foliage you can spray with Roundup however if the foliage has died off your best options is to pull it up and dig over the ground removing all of the roots. If new growth appears next year then spray the new active green foliage.Keep repeating the process. It may seems like a battle but keep persevering!

Tip of the week: Plant your hedges and trees now! They take very little looking after if planted now and will flourish come the spring.
