A GWENT police officer who helped revive a heart attack victim in her Newport home is to receive a top national life-saving honour.

PC Sian Baumber has been awarded a Resuscitation Certificate by the Royal Humane Society, which is the main national body for honouring life-saving bravery, for her role in reviving a woman on October 10 last year.

PC Baumber was praised by the society’s secretary as he announced the award at the Society’s London headquarters yesterday.

Dick Wilkinson explained how PC Baumber responded to an emergency call from a young man with learning difficulties, whose mother was believed to have had a heart attack at her home.

Mr Wilkinson said: “PC Baumber and a first responder arrived at the same time and found her lying on the bathroom floor and not breathing. It was a very restricted space and difficult to open the door properly.

“Between them though they managed to get in and move her out of the bathroom. PC Baumber then started to administer cardiac pulmonary resuscitation and continued for eight to 10 minutes while the first responder set up equipment and gave air using a mask.

“Two paramedics then arrived and, using drugs and a defibrillator, were finally able to regain a pulse. PC Baumber played a key role in keeping this woman alive, and richly deserves this award.”

No date has yet been fixed for presentation of the award, made on the recommendation of Gwent Police, but it is expected to take place in the near future.
